A Pawn’s Life

I am a Pawn

So I will be drawn

First into this fight

A move I may contrite

Quite like the King

At one given time, I wrestle

One block one time, unless

He plans to castle

The Knight, Bishop, Rook and Queen

Can change track in between

Once I go forward a rack

I can never move back

While I stand in line

It matters not what I opine

Not me but all else in staff

Will make a move on my behalf

When in a fix, they all scream

Tell me to take one for the team

Nothing I do can forestall

For their sake I take a fall

Destiny has a rule of thumb

That King I cannot become

Only good to form a screen

Lucky if I get to be Queen

Seeing what the Knight chose

A crooked path to transpose

The ease with which he went about

My straight path put in doubt

Wise men did remind

An upfront path will one day

Redeem losses left behind

Don’t be swayed by another’s way

All this strife

For the King’s persistence

To save his life

Only meaning for my existence

So goes my story

People mention when I am gone

I left devoid of any glory

A time once a-Pawn
